Know exactly what to bring before you visit the New Mexico MVD

Don't Get Turned Away

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division requires specific documents to apply for a driver's license. Missing even one item means a wasted trip. Use this checklist to make sure you're fully prepared before you go.

Proof of Identity

You must provide ONE of the following:

U.S. Birth Certificate (original or certified copy)
U.S. Passport or Passport Card
Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Employment Authorization Document (EAD)

Social Security Number

You must provide ONE of the following:

Social Security Card
W-2 Form showing your full SSN
Pay stub showing your full SSN
SSA-1099 Form

Proof of New Mexico Residency

You must provide TWO of the following (must show your name and NM address):

Utility bill (gas, electric, water — dated within 90 days)
Bank or credit card statement (dated within 90 days)
Mortgage statement or property tax bill
Rental or lease agreement
New Mexico vehicle registration
School records or report card
Medical or insurance document (dated within 90 days)

For Minors (Under 18)

In addition to the above, minors must also provide:

Completed Parental Consent Form (MVD Form 10007) — signed by parent or legal guardian
Proof of completion of a state-certified driver education course
Parent or guardian must be present at the MVD office

Pro Tips Before You Go

Make copies of all documents before your visit — the MVD may keep originals in some cases.

Schedule an appointment online at mvd.newmexico.gov to avoid long wait times.

Bring your Certificate of Completion from Jenkins Drivers Ed — it's required for minors.

All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies of identity documents are not accepted.

If your name on documents doesn't match (e.g., after marriage), bring legal name-change documentation.
